Cortland Banks Awards OH WOW! Museum $2,000
June 05, 2013
CORTLAND (6/5/13) – As a local community bank, Cortland Banks strives to enhance the communities in which it serves. Sara Smith, AVP, Marketing & Communications Director, said "A grant funded through Cortland Banks helps entire classrooms of students visit OH WOW!, helping our youth to develop learning skills and knowledge in a world-class facility, right in our own backyard!" In addition to the cost of transportation and admission to OH WOW!, volunteers from Cortland Banks are delivering a financial literacy program to participating students. This financial literacy program will help students become stronger savers, enabling them to have a better tomorrow.
On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, Cortland Banks will be sponsoring 80 first graders from McGuffy Elementary in Youngstown. They will be receiving financial literacy lessons between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Last year, students from Warren, Youngstown and Windham were able to turn Cortland Banks’ grant into field trips, full of learning and fun.
As part of the American Bankers Association Education Foundation’s Teach Children to Save Program, Cortland Banks will be discussing the importance of saving. Personal Bankers from North Lima and Boardman, Maria Naples and Bryan Ignazio Assistant Vice President, Community Banking Manager and Business Banker for Mahoning County, will be presenting a lesson that identifies coins and their values. Additionally, they will compare values of coins as part of a fun poem, with the students.
To further their financial literacy initiative, Cortland Banks introduced a new Passbook Savings program in 2012 for children ages 0 - 18. This program is structured to help facilitate strong savings, while promoting financial literacy. According to the ABA, a child with a college savings account is seven times more likely to attend college than one without, regardless of income, race, or academic achievement. Cortland Banks wants to help facilitate strength in savings within our local communities. More information on Strong Saver Passbook Savings can be found at: www.cortland-banks.com/strongsaver.
The mission of OH WOW! is to foster independent thinking and enrich the lives of all children by creating a welcoming environment where they can develop learning skills and knowledge through the exploration of HANDS-ON interactive exhibits and educational programs which are rooted in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). OH WOW! is closed Mondays through Labor Day, but open Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
